Who is your website designed for?
Surprisingly, despite most of you getting the right answer, websites tend to be designed for you, the client. Yet you aren’t the one using it.
Even more worrying is that quite a few are designed for your web designer’s ego, lots of bells and whistles, but no real substance.
Few are designed for your prospective clients, which is what they should be designed for. After all, they are the ones we are trying to communicate with.
The first step to a really productive website is to understand its users. You find what they need, and help them get it. There are two key elements to doing this.
Speak to them in their language.
Search engines like Google have ‘keyword research tools’. This shows you what people are actually searching for, not what you think they should be searching for. It is important that we show a little empathy with the website, and speak to them in words they understand.
Help them achieve what they have set out to do.
Everyone has a buying cycle. We all go through various stages when we are considering buying something. Understanding where your prospective clients are in their buying cycle, and helping them satisfy that stage of it, will help them move towards making an enquiry.
That really is the way to design for your prospective clients. With this foundation you have a strong basis to move forward with your website.
